Musical Theatre

The Studio boasts a healthy roster of middle school, high school, college, and adult students who attain leading roles in school, community, college, and professional productions throughout The Miami Valley. Many students, since 1985, have gone on to professional theatre work on Broadway, national tours, and professional theatre.

Darin was trained in musical theatre directing by the legendary, Joshua Logan. In 2009, he directed his 95th musical production, SOUTH PACIFIC. This was a great honor as it was the 60th anniversary of the original premiere of SOUTH PACIFIC which had been co-written and originally directed by Joshua Logan.

Darin is currently involved in several personal writing projects, near and far, and actively works with students and young playwrights, actors, and directors who are eager to work in the field, professionally.

INSPIRING INDIVIDUALS…

Darin is inspired by his former teachers: Joshua Logan in directing, Mary Hagopian in voice, Fred Waring in choral conducting and performance techniques, Douglas Amman in choral conducting, Wayne Dorothy in instrumental conducting, Timothy Brimmer in choral and instrumental conducting, Frederick Mountford in choral conducting and performance techniques.

Darin has been greatly inspired in his studies of lyric writing by Oscar Hammerstein II and Stephen Sondheim.

He has also been greatly inspired by his colleagues and friends, Joe Deer, Jeffrey Carter, Megan Wean Sears, Terry Stump, and Gregory Hellems.

When you’re directing something, you absolutely have to be involved in all layers of the process.”  — Cate Blanchett

Darin’s Musical Theatre Direction:

  • Director: director of 108 musicals
  • Music Director: musical director for 52 musicals
  • Conductor: conductor for 64 musicals

Directing is really exciting. In the end, it’s more fun to be the painter than the paint.
